The correction detail.

About this treatment

Over time, your vehicle's paintwork inevitably picks up micro-scratches from various sources—ranging from 'automated' high-street car washes to dry wiping or even tight country lanes. These imperfections typically fall into three categories: marring (light hazing), swirl marks (circular medium scratches), and RIDS (Random Isolated Deep Scratches).

As these defects accumulate, they scatter light, leaving your finish looking dull, lifeless, and devoid of reflection. The Correction Detail is designed to systematically remove these defects, levelling the clear coat to restore a deep, mirror-like gloss and breathtaking clarity to your paintwork.

The Paint Correction Detail is what Joe Huntley considers the classic detail and what most people think of when they hear 'car detailing'. This is Joe Huntley's most requested detailing service.

Preparation is key.

While the heart of this treatment is the paint correction itself, the results are won or lost in the preparation. I dedicate significant time to ensuring every inch of your vehicle is surgically clean before a machine polisher ever touches the surface.

The Foundation of My Process:

  • Wheels & Arches: I jack your vehicle up to provide deep-access cleaning to the wheel arches, wheels, and tires. This ensures the "unseen" areas are just as pristine as the bodywork.

  • Intricate Detailing: I meticulously clean door shuts, badges, and grilles—those tucked-away areas that a standard wash mitt simply glides over.

  • The Contact Wash: Following a deep snow foam pre-wash to lift loose grit, I perform an ultra-safe contact wash using premium tools and pH-neutral products to ensure a scratch-free clean.

  • Chemical & Mechanical Decontamination: A standard wash isn’t enough for a true correction. I use dedicated fallout removers to eliminate ferrous metals (iron) and safely dissolve tar deposits. Finally, a clay bar treatment removes any remaining bonded contaminants, leaving the paint perfectly smooth and ready for polishing.

The correction & protection process

The correction & protection process

With the surfaces surgically clean, I begin the paint correction. This stage alone typically requires upwards of fifteen hours of focused labor. My sixteen years of professional experience allows me to understand how different paint finishes respond and exactly how far I can safely "cut" the surface to achieve the best possible result.

  • Masking & Measuring: Before a machine touches your car, I mask all delicate trim and rubber to prevent cross-contamination. I then use a digital paint depth gauge to analyse the thickness of the clear coat, ensuring there is a healthy margin to polish safely.

  • The Cutting Stage: This is the most labor-intensive part of the detail. Using specialised cutting compounds, I level out swirl marks and RIDS. While this heavy stage removes the deep defects, it can often leave a slight haze behind.

  • Paint Jeweling: This is a crucial step. I follow the heavy cutting with a "jeweling" process, using fine polishes to remove any holograms or marring. This restores depth, leaving the reflections crisp and crystal clear.

  • Protection: To lock in the finish, I apply either a high-grade T1 Carnauba Wax (for a 3–4 month "warm" glow) or a paint sealant (for 6–8 months of "clinical" high-gloss protection). For those seeking the ultimate durability, this stage is frequently upgraded to a ceramic coating for the ultimate level of protection.

  • Finishing Touches: No detail is complete without the final flourishes. Wheels, tires, and arches are dressed and protected. The interior is thoroughly vacuumed and wiped down, with isolated stains addressed, and all glass is cleaned to a streak-free finish.
